The success of most blogs depends on frequent updates to keep them topically relevant and attractive to both readers and search engines. This means you’ll have to develop daily (or almost) blogging habits so you may want to write on a subject that you’re passionate about.

For all you company bloggers, you’ll want to show your potential clients/readers that you’re an expert within your industry. But more specifically, you’ll be able to position yourself better if you develop a specialization or niche. In traditional marketing, this would have narrowed your market down dramatically. However, since there are 1.3 billion users online, niche markets are made up of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people!

Here are some things to keep in mind when developing a niche blog:

Look to leaders in your industry. At Apollo, we’ve talked extensively on drawing from your peers in the blog community. Take a look at what blogs are already ahead in your industry so you can start to carve out your differentiation. Who are their readers and how will your audience differ? Look at the depth of coverage and what value your fellow industry bloggers provide their readership. Can you do the same thing but with your own audience? As social media experts, we suggest subscribing to their feeds and becoming regular readers as part of your industry research.

Let your audience know a little about you. Nothing will make your blog more unique than a little personal information injected into your posts. While you may have specific content that you are touching on, don’t be afraid to relate personal experience and put your opinions out there. This allows your readers to relate to your blog better, while making it easier to write, too! Plus, readers evaluate information based on the source, by making it personal, you allow them to get to know you and trust your information. Of course, you don’t want to go overboard, so make sure your personal experience is relevant to your subject matter.

Study your traffic sources and the responses from your readers. Respond to any comments, emails or links that your articles receive. Also be sure to study your web analytics to understand what content is driving the most traffic to your blog. It will give you an idea of what your audience is most interested in and what you might want to focus on for future posts.

Don’t get painted into a corner! If you feel that your blog writing is getting too narrow and it’s difficult to come up with new posts, then broaden the scope of your articles. You can still stay in your respective niche while touching on a variety of subjects. Try approaching things from different angles to add interest and consider the perspectives of your readers for more guidance. More often than not, getting out of writer’s block involves visiting other industry blogs to harvest ideas. Always be sure to give your own personal spin to it, so you don’t get caught being a stenographer for other people’s ideas!

So there are some key points that may help you establish a successful blog dedicated to an attentive niche market. At Apollo’s Blog, we will continue to bring you blogging advice so you can stand among the best in your industry. So get going and get passionate about your blog! Your readers will thank you for it!
